More Than a Crush

Ladies in comics aren't always relegated to the roles of helpless damsels in distress or impossibly proportioned Barbie doll heroines in skin-tight costumes, and ladies creating comics don't have to fall into the mold of cranking out dull everywoman schlock like Cathy. Exhibit A: the awkward high school protagonist of Esther Pearl Watson's Unlovable. With the idea of exploring the boundaries of comic art and defining just what a comic is, Watson is bringing more female artists of all stripes to explore the form with her exhibition, Super Secret Crush: Ladies Comix Art. More than 20 illustrators, screenwriters, toy makers, musicians, photographers, tattooists and more explore the narrative art form in the exhibition. Each offers up to five different works, and the results are on display 1 to 5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays and by appointment through September 18 at Webb Gallery, 209 W. Franklin St. in Waxahachie. Call 972-938-8085 or visit webbartgallery.com for more information.
Saturdays, Sundays, 1-5 p.m. Starts: July 30. Continues through Sept. 18, 2011
