Play-N-Skillz Sue Lil Wayne -- And His Entire Posse -- For $1 Million Over "Got Money" Rights
For two years now, Juan and Oscar Salinas, the Dallas-based production duo known as Play-N-Skillz, have publicly and repeatedly claimed that they had never received payment for their work on the 2009 Grammy-winning T-Pain and Lil Wayne collaboration, "Got Money," from Lil Wayne's Tha Carter III release. Yesterday, they took things a step further.
In a lawsuit filed yesterday in Manhattan federal court, the brothers reassert their claim that they were never paid for their efforts on the song. The lawsuit further states that the Salinas brothers are now seeking "no less than $1,000,000.00" in compensation. The defendants listed? Lil Wayne and pretty much everyone behind his music, including Young Money Entertainment, Cash Money Records and Universal Music Group.
The lawsuit comes less than three months after Play-N-Skillz announced plans to again produce for Lil Wayne on the rapper's upcoming Tha Carter IV release. Play-N-Skillz could not be reached for comment. Their manager, meanwhile, denied commenting on both the lawsuit and the possibility of future Lil Wayne and Play-N-Skillz collaborations.
Reports in outlets such as the New York Post have claimed that the lawsuit stems from the unsolicited sampling of a previously released Play-N-Skillz song. Not so says Play-N-Skillz' New York-based attorney, Brian Caplan: "It's not a copyright infringement claim or anything like that," he tells DC9. "It's a co-authorization and co-ownership claim."
The lawsuit -- posted for your reading pleasure after the jump, along with the music video for "Got Money" -- backs this assertion up.
We'll keep you posted as further details surface.
Update at 4:32 p.m.: Play-N-Skillz just tweeted a statement on the lawsuit. Reads the tweet: "Business is business its nothing personal!"
