  • Yesterday at NX35: Night One? Fairly Successful!

Until 7 p.m. last night, the Square seemed pretty much business as usual for a cold, wet afternoon in Denton. Well, except for all the people in black NX35 t-shirts hurriedly scuttling around from door to door like manic crabs. Armed with clipboards, walkie-talkies and purposed demeanors, the busy "blackshirts" buzzing around the sidewalks were the first sign that something was, well, out of the ordinary. And, as the grey sky skies dimmed, it was increasingly obvious that this wasn't just an ave

  • Echoes and Reverberations: Mad Chops and Culture Jamming on Fry Street

Check out our accompanying slideshow for more images from this week's installment of Echoes and Reverberations.Sly Stone was born there. Roy Orbison and Don Henley went to school there. Pat Boone and Dr. Phil even made the scene. But enough about all that: Let's talk about skronk monkeys trippin' balls at Fry Street Fair. Let's remember the graffiti artists getting sick with the acrylic... and smelly jazz doods rippin' minor scales for eight hours straight in an effort to land a spot in the UNT

BAND(s): Spooky Folk and The Baptist GeneralsVENUE: The Hydrant Café TIME: 9:30 & 10:30 p.m. Having already raved about the living-room-vibe of The Hydrant's upstairs room, I'll leave that alone--other than mentioning that, as far as intimate performance spaces in Denton (not including DIY house venues), I can't think of anyplace more appropriately suited for showcasing either of these acts. I'd already seen Kaloe Kaualoku performing his Spooky Folk material in solo sets around Denton's cof

  • Yesterday at NX35: The Sun'll Come Out, Tomorrowpeople

The Internet thinks your Interstate 35E sucks. Constant rain and two major wrecks in the 45-mile stretch of highway between Dallas and Denton made the drive an absolutely miserable mess. I was feeling sorry for myself that my trip took an hour and a half--more than twice the usual time--until I talked to a few people whose trips took topped the two-hour mark. The weather also seemed to have a dampening effect on the foot traffic in and around the Denton square. Daniel Rodrigue yesterday note

  • Yesterday at NX35: Bringin' the Weird

Denton is a pretty weird cross-section of the world, and people are starting to notice--even the New York Times. Aaron Jacobs But the cold and constant rain didn't keep some of Denton's most eclectic weirdoes from showing up at the Denton Civic Center yesterday. Their conversation was centered on the necessity of 'weird' in creative processes, their community and beyond. 90.1 KERA-FM radio personality Paul Slavens, horn player for Denton's Brave Combo Jeffrey Barnes and legenda

  • Yesterday At NX35: Night Two? Blame It On The Rain.

Blame the rain. Blame the cold. Blame a competing Denton house show. Blame the traffic accidents on Interstate 35 that pushed the commute from Dallas to nearly two hours. Blame whatever you want, but, in the early evening hours Friday night, the venues participating in NX35 were noticeably, jarringly empty. I'm talking 15 people empty. And while a sparse crowd like that can fly at Banter, The Hydrant or even J&Js Pizza, it looks downright eerie at a club like Hailey's.And that was the

Denton was the place to be for live music this weekend, hands down. With the first ever NX35 festival all wrapped up, I wanted to pay it some well-deserved homage with a special edition of Weekend Roundup... Enjoy! The Denton-based, modern country up-and-comers in the Eli Young Band, which performed at the House of Blues just last Friday (see Caity Colvard's slideshow of that concert right here), are scheduled to perform as the musical guests on Jimmy Kimmel Live this evening. So set your DVRs, I guess. Because, y'know, the band's from the area and all.

This flyer by Michael Musselwhite promotes Seryn, This Old House, Western Giants, Younger Sons and Baruch The Scribe at The Treehouse in Denton. Should be a wonderful, mellow evening of acoustic Americana and folk, and this intricately detailed flyer really captures the vibe of these bands.  It's a great poster, easily my favorite of the week--original or otherwise. In fact, if I'd seen it before last night, I could have avoided a slightly embarrasing PoW faux pas.

This looks to be a grand weekend for shows in Denton, with an excellent bill at The Hydrant tonight kicking off the weekend one day early. If you haven't been to a show at The Hydrant yet, then this should be a great bill to catch.
