If for any reason the term “neo-soul” confuses you, head directly to the Sugar Water Festival for a three-hour crash course. The best of the genre–a sultry take on R&B full of hip-hop, jazz and funk elements–hits town on Thursday with Dallas’ greatest neo-soul ambassador, Erykah Badu, headlining the affair. Jill Scott is an obvious fit for the bill, with her soulful singing style anchored by a love for poetry and feminine identity, while Queen Latifah, better known for her early hip-hop career (and dud movies like Taxi) may surprise the Sugar Water crowd with the booming singing voice she only hinted at in the movie version of Chicago.
