On their two studio albums, these Massachusetts indie dudes show off the instrumental chops they honed at Boston’s Berklee College of Music. The knotty, densely composed songs on last year’s self-titled disc shapeshift, Frank Zappa-style, moving from tightly wound surf-punk to delicate post-Zombies guitar-pop to shaggy West Coast folk-rock with more precision than you’d expect from a band whose name suggests a dose of flower-power fallout. Live, Apollo Sunshine loosens up considerably, pumping up the volume and upping the level of chaos that lurks at the edges of their controlled blast. That transformation will make particular sense during tonight’s late Tea Room gig, which doubles as an after party for Sonic Youth’s ballroom-side show. Bring your stub for free entry.
