Jana Hunter’s otherworldly voice isn’t exactly what you’d expect to hear coming from a girl raised in Arlington. After appearing on the Devendra Banhart-curated Golden Apples of the Sun compilation, the enigmatic Hunter teamed with the freak-folk king to release both a vinyl split and a full length LP on the singer’s Gnomonsong imprint. Documenting a decade’s worth of songs recorded mostly on four-tracks, Blank Unstaring Heirs of Doom mixes Edith Frost-style folk with the type of carefully orchestrated low-fi hiss you might expect to hear on a Microphones album. It’s not casual listening, to be sure, but a voice like Hunter’s can’t help but sink its teeth into you, no matter how much static it’s buried under.
