It’s not like John Easdale hadn’t gotten offers before, but this day in early 2004 it was different. After being subjected to a full-court press by the crew of VH1’s Bands Reunited, this time the retired Dramarama frontman decided to unretire. Time for one of the most overlooked bands of the ’80s to dust off signature underground classics “Anything, Anything” and “Last Cigarette.” Far more than the typical ’80s wonder band, Dramarama produced a string of albums, including Cinema Verite and Stuck in Wonderamaland, that hold up like little from that era does. Easdale’s caustic and optimistic melodic brilliance still shines on the new album Everybody Dies–the band’s first in 12 years–and it’s still cut with a serious underlying edge like that of the indisputably great “Anything, Anything.” If their comeback show at SXSW 2004 was any indication, be prepared for a live show that’s tight as hell and surprisingly loud.
