Relocating from their Melbourne, Australia home to London before the release of 2009 debut Conditions, The Temper Trap blended like lemon and iced tea. The quintet’s sweeping pop melancholia follows on the heels of moody post-millennial U.K. rockers like the Editors and Keane, but with a stronger strain of U2, recalling the Edge-biting adult alternative of Civil Twilight. At the center is Indonesian-born singer Dougy Mandagi’s pirouetting tenor, which soars with the self-possessed swagger of Steve Perry. Their self-titled follow-up broadens their sound, soft-pedaling its more slavish piano-rock tics while embracing soul and dance elements. San Diego’s Crocodiles open.
