Science, in its broadest sense, is about ordering and organizing knowledge. It’s human nature to tuck the sprawling mass of the natural world under a set of rules. But the universe is beyond our full understanding, says Kate Colin. The work in her Hyperchromagraph exhibition reflects this idea, featuring large opaque clouds that look as if they’re attempting to imitate the distant nebulae photographed by the Hubble telescope. Colin then shapes these organic clouds with transparent lines and divides them with radial grids. Not all of the painting is ordered by these segmented grids, however, leaving the fringes ambiguous and disordered. A hypothetical galaxy that, like our own, resists simplification. Colin’s installation will dominate the space at Mokah Art Gallery, surrounding viewers her large-scale, mathematically themed work.
