I first heard Ladysmith Black Mambazo performing “Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes” with Paul Simon on a Saturday Night Live repeat I caught on Comedy Central. That was also the last time I knowingly heard them, but it’s not because I wasn’t impressed—they certainly danced better than Chevy Chase in that god-awful “You Can Call Me Al” video, and the blending of their voices was something to behold. I’m glad I didn’t become a fan, though, because I’m pretty sure the choice of guests on their new album would have made me cry (they include both Sarah McLachlan and Melissa Etheridge). But look on the bright side—if they can wrangle the Indigo Girls into singing on the next album, they’ll be the favorite South African singing group of lesbians everywhere. TITAS presents Ladysmith Black Mambazo at SMU’s McFarlin Auditorium, 6405 Boaz Lane, this Tuesday at 8 p.m. Tickets are $14 to $59. Call 214-528-5578 or visit titas.org.
