A friend once referred to my apartment as incapable of housing two people, saying such an arrangement would be as comfortable as a prison cell. I find my space to be less than roomy, sure, but generally comfy. I’m grateful for it, for my things in it, for my ability to come and go from it as I please. I cannot imagine being chained to a Beirut prison wall in a cell with two other hostages, relying on each other’s tales and memories to keep our minds off the hellacious reality. Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me, the 1992 Tony nominee, is about just that. Based on the lives of former hostages Brian Keenan and John McCarthy, the play examines the power of friendship, humor, tragedy and confined spaces. After this, an efficiency seems palatial and normal dialogue such as “What a shitty day, man. Thanks for helping me get through it” matters a bit more.
