Should we, as a society, be able to pee freely? It’s an important question, one taken on by our European brethren (who say “no,” by the way) and by a McDonald’s just off the Woodley Park Metro stop in Washington, D.C. (which also says “no,” and asks for a quarter before you enter the dank confines of its ladies room). When you’ve gotta go, you’ve gotta go — and in some places, you’ve gotta have cold hard cash to do so. That’s the premise of Urinetown, a musical that seems like it’s going to be a jaunty and fun commentary on capitalism and greed and pee-pee and somehow twists and turns into the No. 1 most nihilistic and dystopian piece of musical theater ever, one that’s somehow tempered by catchy little tunes like “It’s a Privilege to Pee,” and by elements of the show that are straight parodies of some of Broadway’s most overwrought works. Urinetown, produced by the Irving Community Theater, makes a splash at the Irving Arts Center, 3333 North MacArthur Blvd. through August 18. Shows are 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2:30 p.m. Sundays. Tickets are $19 to $21 and may be purchased at irvingartscenter.com.
