Star-Crossed Eyes

In English-speaking culture, we’ve long embraced such classic works as The Crucible, The Grapes of Wrath and Weekend at Bernie’s II. But perhaps the most well-known classic is the story of star-cross’d lovers Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet, whose plight has been translated into such diverse renditions as the New York City-set West Side Story and the kinda modern-day Baz Luhrmann version with super-hotties Claire and Leonardo. Undaunted by these adventurous adaptations, the Frisco Community Theatre decided that its take on Shakespeare’s classic would be set in Prohibition-era America. Will Sampson bite his suspenders at Abraham and Balthasar? Will Romeo wonder what Charleston behind yonder window dances? Will Juliet procure a potent moonshine elixir from Friar Lawrence, only to have Romeo, too drunk from an evening at the local speakeasy, mistake her for dead? Will Kevin Costner and Sean Connery make cameos in their desperate search for the elusive Robert DeNiro? You’ll have to go see the play to find out. Performances are at 7774 Maple St. in Frisco, 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays through May 7. Tickets are $10 to $12. Call 972-377-3868.
