With Hairspray, John Waters wrote and directed his first PG-rated film (a step down from his earlier X-ratings), tackling issues of teen angst, racial turmoil and true love all in one combed-out/teased-up package. Then Broadway took over and made the beehives bigger and the dance numbers more spectacular. What remained unchanged were the many positive messages behind the peculiar cast of characters. Well, that and the delicious drag-queenery of it all. The role of Edna Turnblad (originally played by the infamous Divine) has attracted such actors as Harvey Fierstein, Michael McKean and even John Travolta, who gives her heels a spin in the upcoming movie remake. The Tony-winning musical is currently touring with Jim J. Bullock starring as Edna’s husband Wilbur. Hooray! Hairspray is running through Sunday at the Bass Performance Hall, Fourth and Commerce streets in Fort Worth. Show times vary and tickets range from $30 to $85.
