If there’s any animal that’s definitely been screwed over by mankind, it’s the turtle. We’ve polluted its habitat, stolen its eggs, caught it in fishing nets, driven some species to near extinction and, perhaps most heinously, forced it to live at the mercy of small children. The film Amphibious (Login-Logout) follows six turtles as they bask lazily on a piece of driftwood, floating past the monstrous industrial center nestled along China’s Pearl River. If Milo and Otis starred turtles instead of mammals (and contained some implied commentary about industry and globalization), it might end up looking like this. Amphibious is part of a double feature of sorts at the DMA, the other half being Under Discussion, a video exploring the “uncertain status of the Puerto Rican island of Vieques,” where U.S. military testing has left the native population with a high cancer rate and a serious bone to pick. Both videos were created by Jennifer Allora and Guillermo Calzadilla, a creative team well known in the art world for their work in photography, performance and mixed media.
