My mom didn’t approve of Barbies. She thought they were too sexual for grade-schoolers. (I do admit that when I played with the forbidden toys at a friend’s house, we sometimes made Barbie and Ken do naughty, naughty things. But honestly, what are you supposed to do with nubile, poseable dolls?) But she didn’t object to me playing the ponies. She, in fact, became my purveyor of fine equines. Butterscotch was the first in my stable—I still remember her golden mane, happy smile and soft, plastic scent. She was soon joined by other My Little Ponys, each with a distinctive “birthmark” on its rear flank and its own plastic comb. Throughout my childhood, my bedroom was the paddock for a veritable herd of pastel, rainbow-tailed and So-Soft ponies. And yet, as far as I know, not one of my vinyl ponies ever came to life. That’s why I was excited to hear about My Little Pony Live! at Nokia Theatre, 1001 Performance Place in Grand Prairie—finally, a magical wizard will grant my wish to have a real, hay-eating, concussion-inflicting pony of my own! Oh, it’s just a stage show featuring “teapots and rainbows, castles and unicorns, balloons and fancy dress-up clothes.” What a disappointment. If you’re still interested, My Little Pony Live! takes the stage Thursday through Sunday. Visit ticketmaster.com.
