If you’ve ever spent a decent amount of time at the Dallas Museum of Art or The Modern in Fort Worth, then chances are you’ve already seen some of photographer Nic Nicosia‘s work. Remember that little girl in a tutu spotlighted on the dining room table or those kids setting fire to a sapling? Yup, those are his. Both museums have several of his photos as part of their permanent collections, and it’s only fitting—Nicosia is after all a hometown boy, born and bred in Dallas, though now he works in Santa Fe. After a four-year hiatus, Nicosia brings us Untitled 2006, a stark black-and-white series that is unlike his prior work. Gone are the real-life portraits, family dramas and costumed casts and sets of the ’80s and ’90s. His newer works have moved in a totally different direction—we are finally being given self-referential Nicosia, which surprisingly resembles sketches and drawings, barely looking like his photos of the past. Though you may have missed the UNT alum at his opening reception, you still have a month to see his work on display at Dunn and Brown Contemporary, 5020 Tracy St. Untitled 2006 will hang through May 5.
