Despite the existence of 10X magnification mirrors, hardly anyone wants to know what they really look like up close. We seek out products that flatter, slim and deodorize; we would rather dye, conceal, paint, tan and microdermabrade our physical bodies than allow anyone (even ourselves) to view our unretouched skin. Because of our innate dislike of our bodies’ peculiarities, the work of sculptor Ron Mueck is likely to make viewers uncomfortable. His ultra-realistic sculptures, cast from lifelike silicone, distort the scale of the human figure, often emphasizing “flaws”—wrinkles, pallid skin, calloused feet—through magnification or miniaturization. Thirteen of Mueck’s unsettling sculptures will be on exhibit at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, 3200 Darnell St., Sunday through October 21.
