One of my favorite parts of the State Fair is the arts building, where one can see a fine selection of jams and jellies, scale models of aircraft carriers and, of course, prize-winning patchwork quilts. The fair is only a few short months away, but you can get a head start on the folk art right now at the Women’s Museum, 3800 Parry Ave., where’ll you find American Pattern Paintings: Wooden Quilts, an exhibit by West Texas artist Fay Jean Hooker. Apparently not much of a seamstress, Hooker instead paints vibrant quilt-inspired patterns on plywood, cutting and assembling thousands of small pieces to create marvels of color and geometry.
