I reached the pinnacle of my acting career in eighth grade, when I was cast as the turtle in Urashima Taro, a Japanese fairy tale. Since this was Kabuki, traditional, stylized Japanese theater, all of us wore thick white makeup and elaborate costumes—my best friend was “the four seasons,” and she got to paint her face with leaves and sun rays and run around spreading springtime cheer. Sound like a good time? Introduce your kids to Kabuki 2 p.m. Saturday at Dallas Public Library’s Children’s Activity Series at NorthPark Center, on Level 1 between Nordstrom and Macy’s. Elementary-aged children are welcome for stories and hands-on activities each Saturday through August, and preschool storytime is at 10:30 a.m. every Wednesday.
