The demise of the bookstore is a well-trodden topic, but it’s still a jarring reality. Few bookstores remain, corporate or independent, and though they can’t compete with the instant gratification that digital downloads allow us, we still like being there. We love seeing “staff picks” and thumbing through pages, or attending events like story times or lectures. Barnes & Noble, 7700 W. Northwest Highway, reminds us that bookstores still play a part in our access to culture in two events, both at 7 p.m. Thursday. On one end of the store, architect Kyle Jeffery provides design insight for teens and adults in the LEGO Architecture Studio. The design director for the global architecture firm Gensler will give some construction basics, answer questions, then demonstrate serious LEGO construction chops during the building event. If you’d rather dive into a book than build a multi-color tower, the CarniePunk Evening may be more your speed. Authors of the carnival-themed anthology CarniePunk, including Mark Henry, Nicole Peeler and Jaye Wells, delve into creepy crowns, crazed carnies and freakish festivals during their discussion and Q&A.
