Way back in 1888, Composer Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky referred to his Fifth Symphony as a failure that would never please the public. Clearly, history has viewed the work quite differently. Now you can judge which side was right at the Meyerson Symphony Center (2301 Flora St.) when the piece kicks off the Dallas Symphony Orchestra’s subscription season Thursday through Sunday. Known best for his Nutcracker ballet and classical works like Romeo and Juliet and The 1812 Overture, Tchaikovsky’s 50-minute-long Fifth Symphony will take you through movements of solemn melodies building to the horn-blasting finale (which comes in handy in waking up your friends). Invite your crush, put on your best ensemble and enjoy this colorful orchestral palette. Tickets cost between $40 and $210.
