The single biggest predictor of a child’s academic success is their exposure to reading at an early age. The single biggest predictor of a parent’s ability to make it through the 1,000th reading of Madeline is their access to the occasional alcoholic beverage. And so, by our math, Booktoberfest increases the odds that your children — and the children of many others benefitting from the event—will all be bookish little geniuses. Lakewood Brewing Co., 2302 Executive Drive in Garland, hosts this wonderful mash-up in conjunction with the local chapter of Room to Read, combining the best parts of International Literacy Month and Oktoberfest from 6:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. Thursday. It’s all beers, brats and books during this event, which includes a brewery tour, beer tastings, food, live music and an auction with prizes that run from growlers to getaways. Proceeds from admission and auctions benefit local Read-A-Thon programs in schools and raise funds for books for children in Asia and Africa. Buy your tickets online for $25 at booktoberfest.eventbrite.com/ or at the door for $32. See roomtoread.org/dallas for more information.
