You may not have heard by now, but we’re celebrating the 50th anniversary of the JFK assassination. “Celebration” may not be the right word, but with all the archive newspaper reprints and the tasteless sexy JFK corpse Halloween costumes, there are a lot of mixed-messages about how America and Dallas feels about the whole thing. UT Dallas’ CentralTrak, 800 Exposition Ave, will attempt to riddle out some of that confusion Friday, with Welcome to Nut Country. Scholars Michael Phillips, Jeffrey A. Engel and Tom Stone will deliver short lectures that aim to “extract meaning from the hoopla.” Phillips is a Collin County College history professor and author of White Metropolis: Race, Ethnicity and Religion in Dallas, 1841-2001. Stone is an SMU English professor who teaches about the ways art and literature construct historical meaning. And Engel is a founding director of the Center for Presidential History at SMU.
