Hegemony (n.): the political, economic, ideological or cultural power exerted by a dominant group over another group, usually through unwitting consent. In less stilted graduate-school terms, hegemony is manipulating the masses to accept a way of thinking, acting, consuming, etc. without them realizing they’re being manipulated. The saps on Jersey Shore are perfect examples…or are they? Maybe Snooki and The Situation really do run the world. My brain hurts just thinking about it. The perpetual problem of power and its abuse is the inspiration for Indig-Nation: Agency and the Hegemonic State, an exhibition of photography, video and art installations all raging against the man, or machine. The free exhibition opens Friday at UT Dallas’ Visual Arts Building, 800 W. Campbell Road in Richardson and runs through November 27. For more information, visit ah.utdallas.edu.

Mondays-Saturdays. Starts: Oct. 29. Continues through Nov. 27, 2010
