I was a nerd and took extra math in high school. Now the work has paid off. I invite you to join with me in using our algebra skills to decipher the title of Mark Collop’s latest exhibition of paintings at the Dallas Central Library: (me + x) + (you + x) = (me + you) + 2x ; x = Backyard. Substitute 3 for “me” (magic number) and “4” for you (you like evens, don’t you?) and 2 for “backyard.” You get 11 on both sides of the equation! It’s like magic, except not, because we understand math, and we don’t understand magic. But we do understand backyards, the inspiration for Collop’s artwork, and time; Collop’s work is on display during library hours: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays. The library is at 1515 Young St., and admission is free. Call 214-670-1643.
