Buddy movies are so very “been there, done that,” right? Old cop, young cop. High-ranking cop, goofy patrol cop. You know the drill. But John Sayles takes the tale and renews it with his latest noir-esque thriller, Go For Sisters, featuring two African-American women in the lead roles. Yolanda Ross plays a parolee trying to stay on the straight and narrow, while LisaGay Hamilton is her parole officer and former childhood friend. After a parole violation, Ross’ character is pushed by Hamilton to assist her in finding a son who disappeared in a shady border trafficking scheme. Edward James Olmos co-stars as a former cop who helps them navigate Mexican territories during their search, but the real star of the show here is the grit shown by the two women — one determined to find her son, the other determined to stay on the right path. The film focuses not on typical buddy-formula fare, but on themes of fortitude and friendship — with a heavy dose of the realism Sayles is known for. Go For Sisters plays as part of the Magnolia at the Modern series at the Modern Museum of Fort Worth, 3200 Darnell St., at 6 and 8:15 p.m. Friday, 5 p.m. Saturday and 11:45 a.m., 2 and 4:15 p.m. Sunday.
