When I was a kid, my best friend Allie’s father was in an Irish folk band. That is what he did for a living, so music was ever present in their household. And, although we were forbidden from touching most of the instruments, they became a source of comfort and familiarity to me. When Allie got a little older, her parents enlisted her in Irish clogging lessons, and she would perform onstage with her father’s band. I thought it was so neat, this deep tradition in her heritage that looked cool and hard to do. Flash forward 15 years, and suddenly there was a worldwide Irish clogging sensation, headed up by shows like Riverdance. All the flash and sparkle hardly had the charm of Allie dancing with ribbons in her hair as her father played an ancient dulcimer behind her, but people sure did seem to like it. See what all the fuss is about when Riverdance returns yet again to the Verizon Theatre at Grand Prairie, 1001 Performance Place, for five performances Friday through Sunday. Tickets are $20 to $65.
