Moral lessons are more interesting when delivered by bears. Although we’re most familiar with Goldilocks’ story (lesson: don’t nap after breaking, entering and porridge-eating), we can’t discount pearls of wisdom from lesser-known bears. The Berenstain Bears, stars of children’s books and a few cartoon specials, are a family that has conquered everything from honey hunts to spooky trees, always with uplifting results. Now, producer Matt Murphy has moved them from the page to the stage in a new musical called Family Matters. These days, the family is working through more realistic threats: junk food, strangers and bad grades. Those subjects may not be as fun as, say, missing honey but they are more relevant to the types of challenges that kids (and some grown-ups!) face today. Goldilocks had a scared-straight moment when she was caught in her bears’ house. But in the world of The Berenstain Bears, lessons taught through song, dance and positive influence can be just as enduring. The Berenstain Bears in Family Matters: The Musical takes the stage 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the Hill Performance Hall at the Charles W. Eismann Center, 2351 Performance Drive in Richardson. Tickets are $11 to $21. Call 972-744-4650 or visit eisemanncenter.com.
