She’s a beautifully dark force in the world of contemporary art, and North Texas gets easy access to Kiki Smith’s latest exhibition, currently on view at UNT Gallery on the Square (109 N. Elm St., Denton). Transformations shows both the artist’s process and final output through a series of five tapestries, along with the drawings, collages and other source materials leading to their completion. All of this is the result of Smith’s recent artist-in-residency at the campus, where she worked with students on printmaking techniques while also sharing studio time with the school’s energized young talents. Sink into the morbidity surrounding Smith’s work as it stays on display through February 27. Visiting hours are 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m. on Monday through Friday. Pop in Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. It’s free. Visit
