John DeMers is a triple threat: he cooks like the devil, writes mystery novels, and hosts a radio show. I’ve never met DeMers, but I bet you my grandmother’s top-secret banana pudding recipe (the secret’s in the Nilla wafers!) that women love him and men want to be him. Heck, I want to be him. A longtime cookbook author, DeMers cooked up Brett Baldwin, a culinary crime-fighter, as the star of the new “Chef Brett” series. Baldwin, fresh off a divorce, heads home to Marfa. Trouble, in the form of an old flame with a missing brother, places Chef Brett in the path of kidnappings, murder and drug lords. Hold on to your poofy chef hat! DeMers is bringing Chef Brett to life at a couple of readings/cooking classes. In between selections from Marfa Shadows, he’ll show you how to make Brett’s signature Texas-flavored cuisine, like Shiner-braised beef short ribs, praline sweet potatoes and jalapeno-cheese polenta. DeMers will be at Central Market in Dallas (5750 E. Lovers Lane) tonight and Central Market Fort Worth (4651 W. Frwy) on Friday. Seats are limited; reservations are $60 and can be made at centralmarket.com. Both sessions begin at 6:30 p.m. and conclude at 9 p.m.

Thu., June 24, 6:30 p.m., 2010
