It’s long been noted how swiftly pop culture eccentrics can quickly fall from their status as household names to household jokes, then to obscurity, and then finally, inevitably, into celebrity rehab shows. Or they can just skip the rehab shows and hit the comedy club circuit where they can lampoon their own brief fame. Such is the case for Christopher “Kid” Reid of the classic 1980s hip-hop/comedy duo Kid ‘n’ Play. For those who don’t remember–i.e. those born after 1990, Kid ‘n’ Play were a musical act as well as stars of the House Party comedies of the early Nineties. Well, Kid was the one with the three-foot-tall cylindrical afro, and he’s bringing his comedy to Hyena’s in Mockingbird Station next to the Angelica Theatre. His father is Jamaican, and his mother is Irish, so there will probably be plenty of material on how various ethnicities are different from each other. If your only going for the afro, however, you might want to save your money because I’m pretty sure it’s gone now. He’ll be performing Thursday through Saturday. Admission is $10 to $15, with a two-item minimum. Hyena’s is 18 and up. Visit hyenascomedynightclub.com.
