When it comes to performance art, the only artist who springs to mind is Marina Abramovic. Oh, you know, the woman who plopped down for a few days in New York’s Modern Museum of Art. Visitors sat at a table across from her and stared into her eyes. People ate it up. Although she’s arguably the most famous, many more provocateurs of performance art exist in contemporary art. Beginning this weekend, Red Arrow Contemporary, 1130 Dragon St, presents Open Archive, an exhibition of five artists whose work explores ritualistic performance art. The art of Jessica Pizana-Roberts examines body politics, while that of Thomas Riccio presents documentation of various cultures, focusing on indigenous peoples. An opening reception for the work takes place 6-9 p.m. Saturday with a performance of participating artist Matt Kubo’s “Karaoke Hut.” The exhibition remains on display through May 3. Entry is free.
Sat., April 5, 6-9 p.m., 2014
