It’s nice to see the humble ukulele making a comeback, as the bright, simple four-string mini-guitar always manages to make people smile. Hopefully the uke’s re-emergence into popular music will result in regained prominence for other instruments that have fallen into obscurity, like the hurdy gurdy. Until interest in that crazy medieval wheel-fiddle contraption can support a festival, there’s always the Lone Star Uke Fest and Music Camp, with performances, jams and classes on blues, swing, Hawaiian music, “Gypsy” Django-style uke and Tin Pan Alley music, as well as Hawaiian lap steel guitar. The fun (which benefits the Ukes in the Classroom program) is Thursday through Saturday at the Holiday Inn Select, 2645 Lyndon B. Johnson Freeway. There’s a free beginner class at 1 p.m. Thursday. Tickets for the Saturday night dinner and barbecue are $49 and full fest registration is $299. Visit lonestarukefestival.com.
