The Kids Are All Right

There’s a moment in everyone’s life when they realize that they are no longer in the “youth” demographic. It happens without warning, like maybe when browsing Urban Outfitters — music blaring — and coming to the realization that the selection of netted crop tops and sequined trapeze dresses are out of your wheelhouse. Or when you’re out at a show and spy a high school classmate’s grown kid pushed up toward the front of the stage. It’s a scary moment, but it’s OK — you should know that the future is in good hands, affinity for cropped clothing notwithstanding. You’ll have a chance to see that the kids are totally all right at Kitchen Dog Theater’s 2014 Playwrights Under Progress (PUP) Fest, which showcases dramatic productions written by local high school students and produced in conjunction with the Junior Players. The staged readings highlight the very best in local talent from grades nine through 12, featuring five workshopped pieces performed at 1 p.m. and again at 4 Saturday at the McKinney Avenue Contemporary, 3120 McKinney Ave. Admission is free.
