The recently reopened Trees club in Deep Ellum may seem an odd place to hold a stand-up comedy show. After all, this is the historic venue that has traditionally been home to rock shows, including the infamous 1991 Nirvana melee wherein Kurt Cobain and bouncer Turner Van Blarcum traded blows. But comic Doug Stanhope‘s performances often feature the same tension-charged atmosphere that some of the rock world’s most legendary confrontational performers generate. A strident libertarian, at some point he’ll almost certainly tell a pointed joke that pisses off a just-say-no type, a pro-lifer or the relative of a troop (“I’m sure your son is fighting for our freedom over there, because if it wasn’t for him, we’d all be speaking Iraqi,” he said during one tense 2004 exchange after conspiracy theorist Alex Jones had warmed up the crowd in the same way an hour in a broiler oven would have.). Then, rather than ignore the infuriated fan, he’ll start a crowd-wide debate likely to boil over into a near riot.
