Contrary to what you might believe, Give It Up! is not an anti-abstinence seminar, but rather a “contemporary pop musical comedy” written by playwright Douglas Carter Beane (Xanadu; To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar). You weren’t too far off base, though, as the play–based on the ancient Aristophanes comedy Lysistrata–tells the story of a group of cheerleaders who decide to withhold the whoopee until their athlete boyfriends can win a game for Athens University’s long-struggling basketball program (I’m pretty sure this was also a discarded plotline from the never-filmed screenplay of Revenge of the Nerds V). Catch it at 8 p.m. Saturday or 7 p.m. Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday, with additional showtimes through Valentine’s Day. Tickets are $15 to $85. Call 214-880-0202 or visit dallastheatercenter.org.
Jan. 15-21; Fridays, Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Saturdays, Sundays, 2 p.m.; Sun., Jan. 24, 7 p.m.; Tuesdays-Thursdays, 7 p.m. Starts: Jan. 15. Continues through Feb. 14, 2010
