Before I got old enough to pair up with a lady and start attending dinner parties, I never really understood why said parties were the setting for so many pivotal events in film and theater. After all, they look pretty boring on the surface, especially if you’re used to your average, uproarious college kegger. But once you start going to these things, it all starts to make sense. Throw a little wine at two or three couples and practically anything could happen: uncomfortably tense arguments, startling confessions, politically incorrect board game answers, catfights–you name it. The dark comedy Hunter Gatherers takes dinner party debauchery to a whole new level, however, opening with an animal sacrifice and sprinkling in liberal doses of sex, violence and deception along the way. As the press release puts it, “the party grows increasingly savage as the couples digress to primal instincts to survive.” Catch Hunter Gatherers at 7:30 p.m. Thursdays and 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays (with a special 2 p.m. matinee this Sunday) through January 30 at the Addison Theatre Centre, 15650 Addison Road. Tickets are $20. Call 1-800-838-3006 or visit secondthoughttheatre.com.
Fridays, Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Thursdays, 7:30 p.m.; Sun., Jan. 24, 2 p.m. Starts: Jan. 15. Continues through Jan. 30, 2010
