What do you get when you take one of Dallas’ finest movie theaters, one of Fort Worth’s finest museums, and combine the two into one extraordinary event? Well, naturally, you get Magnolia at the Modern, a weekly series that features viewings of critically acclaimed films. From Friday through Sunday, the folks at the Modern are screening Queen to Play, a feel-good French film that according to Stephen Holden of the New York Times, “plucks the game of chess out of the metaphorical realm of spy thrillers and reimagines it as a fable about relationships and upward mobility.” Whoa. Checkmate, indeed. Advance sales begin two hours prior to each showtime, so it’d suit you to go to the Modern, explore and catch the screening a couple hours later. Tickets will run $8.50 ($6.50 for members), and showtimes are 6 and 8 p.m. Friday, 5 p.m. Saturday, and noon, 2 and 4 p.m. Sunday. For more info, check out themodern.org/magnolia or call 817-738-9215.
Fri., July 1, 5-8 p.m.; Sat., July 2, 5-8 p.m.; Sun., July 3, 5-8 p.m., 2011
