The holidays are over, and 2010 has begun. I’m guessing you have some crap to get rid of. That Christmas tree? It’s not taking on any more water, friend. And if you didn’t get a new cell phone/PDA from someone who loves you, just go get one. It’s not like that roller ball or touch screen is getting any younger. Once that’s done, bring the lot–that’s right, the trees and the phones–to Texas Discovery Gardens at Fair Park on Saturday. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., drive on through Gate 6 and follow the signs to recycle your decoration-free tree (to provide mulch for the Gardens) and phones/PDAs (to benefit Recycle to Eradicate Poverty). Also that day, at 10:30 a.m., visitors have the opportunity to release a colorful tropical butterfly as part of the “Come to the Tropics” Mass Butterfly Release celebrating the new Rosine Smith Sammons Butterfly House and Insectarium. Because you know what? You might need to ditch the fir and the Nokia, but ol’ Blue Morpho is waving bye-bye to the cocoon (I’m not sure those are recyclable). Butterflies for release are $15 and go on sale at 10 a.m. Watching the release or visiting later for a tour of the house by Captain Chrysalis is included in regular admission.
