At first glance, a spelling bee doesn’t seem like the sort of setting that inspires great musicals (or even good ones). But if you’ve ever teetered on that precipice of hope in that half second before the judge says your spelling of mendacity (m-e-n-d-a-c-e-t-y) is incorrect, you’ll know the possibilities are there. Spelling bees may not be a big deal now, but back when we were all shorter, it was a chance to fit in, to stand out or to finally be good at something. That’s how the six competitors in Tony award-winning musical The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee feel, and they put those feelings in songs both hilarious and heartbreaking and worth the price of the ticket. The show’s at Theatre Three, 2800 Routh St. in the Quadrangle. Tickets are $20 to $40. Call 214-871-3300 or visit theatre3dallas.com for information.
