I have a great mom, but I was always jealous of J.J. Evans, the character played by Jimmie Walker on Good Times. He had Florida Evans, and there was no finer mom. If you were bad, Florida would tell you exactly what you did wrong and how you were going to pay for it. No negotiation. But if you did good, or needed a little extra love, she would take you in her big arms and make you feel like the most important kid on earth. Florida had the touch. Thursday through Saturday, Jimmie Walker comes to Hyena’s in Arlington, 2525 E. Arkansas Lane, and I hope he still has the touch. Walker started in stand-up, which he has continued to do ever since Good Times ended in 1979. For more information, call 817-226-5233 or visit hyenascomedynightclub.com.

If you’ve ever learned something new, stayed informed, or felt more connected because of the Dallas Observer, now’s the time to give back.
