What Exactly Is Strange About Cat Serenades?

Random acts of absurdity are what keep life interesting. You don’t remember each and every run around White Rock Lake, but you do remember the one when you saw the guy strumming his guitar and singing to his cat, who was lounging on a blanket by the shore. It was incongruous among all the runners and stroller-pushers, and it was delightfully off-kilter. There’s a new exhibit at SMU’s Pollock Gallery, 3140 Dyer St., that explores those types of occurrences — the daffy events that make everyday happenings a little more memorable. Stranger Than Fiction exhibits paintings, videos, drawings and textiles from artists Julia Brown, Erika DeFreitas and Nicole Miller that highlight inherent absurdities in politics, commerce, racial issues, familial relationships, economics and other day-to-day affairs. The opening reception for Stranger Than Fiction is at 6 p.m. Friday; the exhibition will be on view through December 13 on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. and on Saturdays from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. Admission is free.
