Although intimately familiar with the bar mitzvah coming-of-age ritual in Jewish tradition, I’ve witnessed only one quinceanera–the coming-of-age ritual for 15-year-old Latinas–and that was in a George Lopez re-run when his daughter Carmen commits social suicide by publicly professing her love for her boyfriend. Another opportunity will arise Saturday, at least thematically speaking, when The MAC hosts its own quinceanera and celebrates its 15-year anniversary with the opening of an exhibit that uses anything “15” in submitted works of art, including visual, performance and literary readings. The exhibit opens with a quinceanera-themed reception on August 1 between 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. It (the exhibit, not the reception) will continue through August 29. For more information, visit at the-mac.org.

Wednesdays-Saturdays, 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Starts: Aug. 1. Continues through Aug. 29, 2009
