These days, technology evolves at hyperspeed. Computers and phones that were top of the line just a few years ago are now obsolete. But ever to be relied upon, artists know just what all of that outdated equipment is good for. Since the ’70s, Lillian Schwartz, Stan Vanderbeek and John Whitney have been making films with digital computer technology. Their work will be honored at McKinney Avenue Contemporary (3120 McKinney Ave.) from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Friday, when the MAC hosts the opening night of Dallas Medianale, a video festival that will run through March 7 and feature installations, screenings and performances in celebration of internationally renowned video art. The opening night is curated by Dallas artist Michael A. Morris and will include a newly restored print of Whitney’s film Arabesque. Following the films, there will be a series of intermedia performances by artists based in Dallas, Chicago, Illinois, and Oakland, California. Still more good news: the event is free, and there’s an after party at the Texas Theatre, where Dallas VideoFest’s director, Bart Weiss, will VJ. Visit www.the-mac.org for more info.
