Motels are a destination for tourism and relaxation, but sometimes those functions are at odds with the land a motel occupies. CentralTrak explores this idea in its latest exhibition, Gallup Motel Butchering. The four-channel video installation by artist collective Postcommodity follows Navajo women preparing a family feast in a motel room in Gallup, New Mexico. The preparations take a dark turn when they center on the butchering of a sheep in the bathtub. This jarring act is the centerpiece of the investigation into what happens when tribal traditions are removed from their natural contexts and placed in a seemingly familiar setting. Head to CentralTrak (800 Exposition Ave.) at 8 p.m. Saturday to view a disruptive take on indigenous traditions. Visit centraltrak.net for more info.
