Make no mistake; spelling bees are highly competitive events. In the splendid 2002 documentary Spellbound, viewers watched as a wide range of young students showed off their smarts and colorful personalities en route to the 1999 Scripps National Spelling Bee. So, what could be more entertaining than little geniuses spelling words few of us know exist? Adults messing up words we all think we know, that’s what. And when the adults are local celebrities such as beloved former Dallas Cowboy and current Fox NFL analyst Daryl “Moose” Johnston and Serita Jakes, the First Lady of the Potter’s House, the stakes are raised quite a bit. Reading Partners, a local literacy support agency, will use this third annual Celebrity Spelling Bee to raise money for local schools so that the youth of today can also be spellbinding. It all happens at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Dallas City Performance Hall (2520 Flora St.) Tickets are $25 – $50, available at (469) 999-7734

Wed., March 4, 6 p.m., 2015
