You’ve seen this story before: 1) Private detectives take on gorgeous, seductive female client. 2) Client gives them a dummy assignment. 3) Detectives figure out they’ve been had, but only after learning too much information and putting their lives at risk. While it sounds stereotypical and formulaic in 2009, The Maltese Falcon is the granddaddy of ’em all, helping establish what eventually became a Hollywood staple. Now, I know it’s tough to get worked up for old movies you feel like you’re “supposed” to see–I was broke and bored in Prague, stuck raiding my roommate’s DVD collection for cheap thrills when I motivated myself to watch the Falcon–but it comes with at least one small reward: You’ll finally be able to make sense of decade-old Simpsons gags. Catch The Maltese Falcon 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Palace Theatre, 300 S. Main St. in Grapevine. Tickets are $7.50. Visit grapevinetexasusa.com for more info.
