Say what you want about the aesthetic merits of urban graffiti, but you can’t deny its effectiveness as a medium. Like anti-billboards, tags and murals are messages we can’t avoid receiving, in a world where nearly everything comes on-demand with a built-in spam blocker. Spray-painted works on buildings, sidewalks, DART trains and everywhere else present ideas and concepts that don’t go through a corporate chain of command or get held to a gallery’s standard of presentability. Of course, it was only a matter of time until galleries embraced this pop medium. Starting with an opening reception at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday and running through March 28, you can appreciate the irony while viewing the UNT Art Gallery’s Graf, Tag and Bomb: The Influence of Graffiti. The gallery is located one block west of Mulberry and Welch streets. Visit gallery.unt.edu.
