For every lucky designer who gets a break on Project Runway, countless others sketch, sew and struggle to make names for themselves in the fashion industry. After his parents abandoned him as a child, Nary Manivong discovered a copy of Vogue while living on the streets of Columbus, Ohio, with his siblings. That discovery led to his love of fashion, and after years of hard work, he landed a show at New York’s Fashion Week in 2008. Manivong’s process of creating a line for Fashion Week on a shoestring budget is the subject of Dressed. The documentary examines his journey from homeless teen to designer and the brutal business of being a young fish in a sea of couture sharks. El Centro College presents the southwest premiere of Dressed at 8 p.m. Friday at Texas Theatre, 231 W. Jefferson Blvd. Manivong and director David Swajeski will appear, and Alexandria Hilfiger, Tommy Hilfiger’s daughter and Manivong’s partner on the label NAHM, will also attend the screening. A minimum donation of $20 is recommended, and seating is limited. Visit thetexastheatre.com for reservations.
